First of all, this house is beautiful; the form, the surroundings, and materials as described are thoughtfully melded together to create a whole that works sublimely. Lucky mother to have a son who was, and still is, so talented!

In my mind, an example that doesn’t work so well in its surroundings is the recently-built Gehry building on 12th Avenue in the 20s. I forget who the company client is, but substantial money undoubtedly was poured into the project. It’s supposed to bring to mind “sails on the open water.” However, the building is adjacent to other large buildings fighting for attention, and you cannot physically step back far enough to appreciate the hopeful openness of view. I wonder if the architect actually thought about the objective in context to its environment. It’s difficult to think Gehry did not consider this, but it certainly looks as though he didn’t. The result is another bulbous building totally out of context, and one wonders whether or not it’s a genuine Gehry after all.

Lastly, I agree with your assessment that these days we have a choice of viewing either another Gehry or another McDonald’s. Or a poor imitation of one or the other.

      Dennis,
I agree with your asssessment that when each building competes with its neighbor for attention, the inherent conflict that results from this tension does not heighten the architectural experience of a “place” but creates the chaos and confusion that is so prevalent in our modern cities.
