My grandparents and parents are long gone and I’m now a greatgrandparent but “can vividly recall the Great Depression.” We were lucky in that my father had a union to come to his aid (some relatives weren’t so lucky).
Married and with a family, I moved to NY in 1950 near Union Square, not far from Gorky’s former studio (he benefitted from the WPA). I began teaching at Long Island University (joined the Teachers Union) and met fellow artist Albert Kotin. At his passing I curated an exhibition of his work and published a catalog. Al had been with the WPA (at $23.86/week, “enough to live on”?) painting Post Office murals, including 2 in Arlington NJ and 1 in Ada Ohio. When the Postmaster in Ada heard about the exhibition and requested a catalog, we were happy to oblige.
Glad to hear about 217 Films of “Early American Modernism.”
    Great Americana!
    Great article!
